Forty years ago, forestry scientist Dr David Ward started scratching away at the trunks of WA’s long-lived balga trees and made an amazing discovery. He found that the exposed black rings correlated to past fire events. Significantly, the scars suggested that much of our southwest forests were burnt by indigenous Australians as often as every two to four years. Read more here…
