The BFF has become increasingly aware of a campaign by environmentalists and academics to constrain or shut down the prescribed burning program in southwest forests. They advocate that it be replaced by a super-dooper fire detection and response force, employing expensive and untested technology.
On the contrary, the BFF strongly supports fuel reduction burning as an essential component of bushfire management. If done properly and at the right scale, it minimises the risk of calamitous fires on bad days.
We have undertaken a detailed analysis of the “green bushfire proposal”, and we have found it sadly flawed. Our analysis is now published in a small pamphlet A Critique of the ‘Response only’ Bushfire Strategy for sw WA.
